California's Delete Act created DROP — the state's official Delete Request and Opt-out Platform. Since August 1, 2026, every data broker registered in California (500+ companies, far beyond people-search sites) must check DROP and delete matching consumers' data on a 45-day cycle — with penalties of $200 per request per day for ignoring it.

How to file (about 5 minutes)

1. Go to the official state portal: thedrop.cppa.ca.gov ↗ Run by the California Privacy Protection Agency — official government site, always free.
2. Create your deletion request — the identity details you provide (name, emails, addresses) are what brokers must match against. Add every email address and every city you've lived in, so more broker records match.
3. Verify your identity through the portal's verification step.
4. Done — it keeps working. Registered brokers must re-check the list every 45 days, forever. New brokers that register must honor it too.
